Students mesmerized with STEAM

Close to 200 children from the Mundelein area explored the Innovation Station at its Grand Opening on Saturday, August 20. Innovation Station, at 470 N. Lake Street, is the first of product of District 75’s new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) Foundation. The foundation is focused on providing enriching learning opportunities for students.

The Innovation Station activities included building light shows with LED boards, creating snap circuits, programming robotics to conduct a series of tasks, using a sewing machine to make a small purse or bag, drawing comic book characters, learning comedy improvisation, creating decorative wristbands from leather, and building bridges and tall towers with everyday materials.

“We built the Innovation Station 75 so students had a place to expand their imaginations outside of the school day,” said Karthik Chandramouli, President of the Mundelein School District 75 STEAM Foundation. “We wanted to create an environment for lifelong learners. Our Makerspace is a setting where children can create, tinker and innovate.”

The District 75 foundation was established about a year ago to help expand STEAM activities in the district. The foundation’s goal is to raise about $25,000 a year to help fund such purchases as 3D printers, but also to help establish a district theater group as well as help re-establish a middle school choir program.

Parents are encouraged to join the foundation’s Facebook page (InnovationStation75) and visit their website (www.innovate75.com) for future workshops in the Innovation Station at the District 75 offices.

The following sponsors helped make the grand opening for Innovation Station 75 a success: Ace Hardware, Agony of De-Feet, AREA General Store, District 75 Board of Education, Dreamland Comics, Home Depot, Robothink, Rustoleum, Target, Tony Cannoli, Village Trustee Dawn Abernathy, and Village Trustee Holly Kim.
